Learning Language

Holly is at a really fun stage right now - she's just starting to talk. Much of the time her chatter is barely comprehensible, if you're really trying to understand and have made a study of her pronunciation.
A few words she pronounces better than others... It rather surprised a sister in our ward when, after picking Holly up, Holly looked her square in the eyes and called her 'Yuck!' OK - so Holly wasn't calling her yuck, she was telling her that something nearby that might be considered edible was not.
Like all of her siblings, Holly learned to call Pooka 'Mama' before she learned to call me 'Daddy', but she has since abandoned almost all use of the word Mama. Instead we're both called 'Daddy'. Usually in sentences. Her sense of sentence structure is still developing. Though she has expanded her patterns recently, her most used structure is 'Daddy a -noun-'. Usually the noun is some object she wants to encourage us to give her or something she sees. Shoes are one of the most used nouns, followed closely by boots. Cookie, chocolate, and bottle are also frequently used.
Holly has learned that practice helps her meaning to be understood, and that it also helps you have words ready when you need them in a hurry. We know this because we've heard her practice. The phrase we've heard practiced the most is 'No Niccus!' She - like a certain elephant - likes to practice at night in the dark. And Holly applies the things she practices - as often to other siblings as to Niccus.
A few weeks ago as I looked at the website of a possible Reunion Ranch M found, Holly excitedly proclaimed 'Daddy a horses!' She was so excited that Pooka and I spent several minutes showing her pictures found on google images.
First we looked at horses. I tried dogs briefly, but she seemed to think they were inferior horse models. Then we went to cookies - which she enjoyed labeling: 'Daddy a cookie!' When we showed her a pan full of cookies she surprised me with 'Daddy a three!' and then counted to three along with Pooka as Pooka pointed to each cookie.
'Daddy a bottle!!' was also fun for her, though she was a little bothered when she saw a siberian tiger kit drinking from a bottle. Just to prepare her for the future we found a few pictures of babies with bottles, and she did surprisingly well at not being jealous. But the biggest surprise for me was when I showed her this picture:

Holly immediately responded 'Daddy a three!'

LOL! I love when these little ones begin to actually communicate! Sweetsa is starting to be able to get her point across...usually when she doesn't want something, with an emphatic hmmm-mmm, head-shaking and puckered lips.
Holly--Good job counting!

When the weather warms up and your clan is on the way through Rochester sometime, we'd love to have you all stop by for pony rides on some REAL horses. :)
